The CEO had big dreams and the most detailed set of product plans I'd ever seen. There was an army of engineers pounding away at a huge backlog with plenty of support from testers and Scrum Masters of every description. But strangely, visible progress from the actual engineers was near zero, with very little connection between the ambitious plan and any actual changes in the business.

When tech teams go off on their own, it's like giving random co-ordinates to your Tesla and then waving goodbye: a powerful engine on a road to nowhere. Don't be fooled by the engine revving and smoke from the exhaust; us engineers are great at looking like we're doing something, but far too many of my clients let techies go "underground" for months or years before they find out there's nothing under the bonnet.
