Learning time for developers goes by many names—training days, growth time, 10% time, conference budget, hackathons. One company I know even calls it "Lounge Time", a name that's sadly all too accurate. Most companies I see give only the vaguest guidance to engineers on what to learn, hope that something relevant comes out of their exploration of blockchain or deep learning, but never measure the results. No surprise that this hardly ever produces product breakthroughs or the hoped-for revolution in productivity!
There are much better ways to ensure your software team have the skills you need. With methods like pairing and just-in-time learning, you can pick up the latest relevant technology, keep developers engaged, and make a real return on your tech investment.
